E-vape flavors:What's your type?

This blog discusses the origins of e-liquid flavors and the different types of flavors available. It may also help you to know how to choose the e-liquid flavor that’s right for you.

The Origins of E-Liquid Flavors

E-liquids are typically formulated from propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), nicotine (or nicotine salts), and food-grade flavorings. Among these, food-grade flavorings are what give the e-liquid its taste. Essentially, any fruit, beverage, or herb can be replicated using food-grade flavorings. This has led to the four major flavor categories: fruit, beverages, herbs, and tobacco.

Types of E-Liquid

Fruit flavors are the most common. Strawberries, watermelon, mango, lemon…almost every fruit you can think of can be an e-liquid flavor. These flavors are typically light, sweet, and natural, making them ideal for first-time vapers or those who prefer a refreshing taste. When choosing fruit flavors, beginners can start with classics like green grapes, watermelon, and lemon—these are safe bets.

'Fruit + ice' is another popular combination. By adding cooling ingredients to fruit flavors—such as Grape Ice, Mango Ice, and Black Ice Mint—the refreshing sensation balances out the sweetness, making these flavors especially popular in the summer. Some users describe mint and icy flavors as options to 'clear their palate' during periods of 'flavor fatigue'.

Pure nicotine flavor, also known as tobacco flavor, is a category that mimics the taste of traditional cigarettes. There is a mild 'original' flavor with a grainy aroma and a smooth draw; there is also a rich 'toasted' flavor with woody notes and a subtle hint of caramel, offering a stronger throat hit—ideal for long-time smokers looking to transition from traditional cigarettes.

In addition to these major categories, there are also some blended flavors, such as “Orange Berry Ice,” which is a sweet-and-sour fruit blend.

Choose Your Favorite Flavor

If you’re unsure which flavor to choose from the many options available, try following these guidelines:

Start with refreshing flavors. Fruity flavors like green grapes, watermelon, and lemon are the most widely accepted and are a safe bet. The 'Fruit Ice' series is also a safe choice; the cooling sensation helps balance the sweetness so it doesn’t feel cloying.

Don’t try too many at once—start with a single flavor. Mixed fruit flavors can sometimes 'clash', making the taste seem chaotic rather than layered. Choosing a single fruit flavor first makes it easier to discern the quality.

Pay attention to sweetness and cooling sensation. Some people prefer a high 'sweetness level', while others can’t stand anything too sweet. If possible, try samples at a physical store; if shopping online, read real reviews carefully, especially looking for the keyword 'cloying'.

Check the nicotine content. Beginners should start with a low concentration (such as 20 mg or 2%). The strong throat hit from higher concentrations may be too intense for those not used to it.
